Sentenced People In State Prisons In The US Whose Most Serious Offense Was Drug Possession
The US Dept. of Justice's Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that at yearend 2020 there were 1,043,705 sentenced people in state prisons in the US, of whom 131,600, or 12.6% of the total, had as their most serious offense a drug charge: 33,700 for drug possession (3.2% of the total) and 97,800 for "other" drug offenses (which includes manufacturing and sale) (9.4% of the total).
